For centuries now, recreation has been a part of the growth and civilization of human beings. They have created sports or games that can help them use their physical bodies and mind. Every country of great history of civilization has a great contribution to the creation of the present sports that are played these days, say for instance; Greece and their ancient civilization have spearheaded Olympics.
As early people create sports they make certain rules and game specification to measure the body’s coordination with the mind and other disciplines of the human physiology. Aside from these rules, they also assign specific equipment for the game. A newer game such as basketball uses equipments that are precise and standard. To play basketball games there are things that are essential in order to properly execute the sport.
The Ball
The basket ball is the primary equipment of the game. The first basket ball was actually a soccer ball. History states that the creation of the game may have been because of the inability of the students to play outside during bad weather. Today, basket balls are made up of rubber or leather. Each federation or league of basketball has their own specific size of the ball.
The NBA (National Basketball Association) adopts official basket ball made up of leather and has a diameter of 23 cm (9”). This must have a pressure of .51 up to .57 atm or a total weight of 7.5 to 8.5 pounds. Other associations like the FIBA or the NCAA have a different requirement on the specification of the ball.
The Court
The basketball court is the enclosed designated area where the game is played. This is a rectangular plane divided into two. The divisions are for the two teams whereby each half of the court will serve as the goal place of each team. Just like the basket ball, the court also differs in size depending on the league or association. The NBA court is 94’ in length and 54’ in width or 29 meters by 15 meters. The line that lies right in the center of the court is called the midcourt line.
The circle at the center most of the court where most of the jump balls are made is called the center circle. The line that serves as the boundary of the court is the base line and the side line. When the ball goes out of this line and if before it has gone out it touched a player’s body, the ball is being awarded to the opponent of the player that the ball touched. There is a circle inside the half circle on the half court.
The center of this circle is the free throw line. The half circle is considered as the three point line. All balls that shoots in to the basket on or before this line is given the points of three. The backboard and the basket are considered part of the court. The backboard as a specific measurement; this must be 10 feet above the ground and, 6’ wide, and 3.5’ tall.
